'Octopus' was conceived in 1971 as a multi-denominational society which would bring people of the Thornbury area together for an assortment of social activities, filling what was felt to be a gap. Some tentacles have withered and died, having ceased to serve a useful purpose whilst others have stayed alive without growing very much, but the drama tentacle has developed beyond all expectations.
The first pantomime Aladdin was performed in 1972 and thirty eight other pantomimes have followed. In 1979 our first play Off the Hook was produced and a further twenty nine plays have played to virtually full houses ever since. In 1991 our first Music Hall was introduced to Thornbury and has been followed every year since with an October Show and all proceeds, which have totalled approximately £10,000, have been donated to charities both local and national.
In May 1999 a Fund Raising Sub-Committee was formed to raise approximately £8,000 for the purchase of a new stage and our dream was realised in just over two years thanks to a generous donation from the Sports and Arts Foundation for which we were extremely grateful. Further information about Octopus can be obtained from our Secretary either through the link or by telephoning 01454 413783.
We perform our shows in the Christ the King Church Hall, Castle Street, in Thornbury.
